What a week! I made it through my first week of school AND the higher mileage for running that was on my training plan with flying colors and a lot of sweat. No, I literally mean a LOT, like a TON of sweat. Just figures that this whole summer has been gloriously mild and dry and our first (and it looks like most of our second week will be too!) of school is hotter and humid as heck and a ton of rain to boot. Gotta love teaching in a school with no A/C. In case you couldn't tell, I'm being sarcastic. The first 6 weeks are usually one bit hot mess.
I got up early on Tuesday to get 5 in before school with no problem since it was early and just at the start of the crazy heat that we've had. Wednesday night was the group training run at The Running Depot and I had some interesting wardrobe issues that night because of the humidity. Not only were there bugs legit stuck to my sweaty mug by the end of the intervals that we did on the track, it was so flippin hot that (I can't believe I'm admitting this, but) my underwear almost fell off. Thank goodness I was not having the same problem with my shorts! Now, if that was TMI, I'm sorry, but one thing I've found about runners is that there is no modesty or shame in all things having to do with bodily functions and fluids and other general body issues you may not talk about with mixed company. The lady I tend to stick with during my training runs was super cool and just said, "Oh, I won't look, go ahead and pull up your underwear." Yeah, that's something I never thought I'd hear from someone that I hardly knew before I started running...
Thursday I was supposed to go out before school again, but got rained out so I had to do it after school. It was gross. But thankfully, the 11 I did on Saturday with the training group was not as bad as I was worried it might be. The humidity was near 100%, but the temperature was only in the low 70's. Don't get me wrong, I was a sweaty mess afterwards, but it really could have been much worse. I made sure to keep up with my water and food and it went well! I think it might have been my farthest run since the marathon!

On my long runs, I've been trying out these awesome compression sleeves that The Running Depot
gave me.
gave me.
I've been wearing these for all of my runs over 6 miles and I really think they have helped! ***WARNING!*** I am not a doctor or scientist and I have never taken anatomy and physiology and all of that jazz, so I've hoping I don't screw this explanation up. Please consult your doctor or a running coach if you have more questions, and maybe read some articles this THIS ONE for a much better explanation. But these sleeves apply graduated pressure from the ankle (where there is the most compression) up to the top of the calf under the knee (where there is less). You must be fitted for these sleeves so you can be sure they don't either slip down all of the time or conversely, turn your legs into sausages. The compression aides in the flow of oxygenated blood to the muscles and it helps prevents a build up of lactic acid. Lactic acid is what makes your muscles sore and fatigued after a work out. I noticed a definite difference in the swelling of my legs and ankles after my 5 mile run on Thursday without the socks (which there was quite a bit) and the 11 mile run on Saturday with the socks (surprisingly less!). Wearing the sleeves for a while after the run is helpful too. Although, then I have to wait on showering which can get a little dicey...
If you have any questions about compression sleeves, the friendly people at The Running Depot would be happy to help you out! Like I said, I'm sure there's MUCH more information that I'm leaving out!
This has been very long already, so I'll cut to the chase with the weight loss: MFP has worked great this week. I did lose this week which was awesome to see since I've been very good...well, up until after my long run yesterday. But one day (well, maybe more like 1.5 days if I'm being totally transparent...) of not sticking to what I should be doing is not going to kill me. I'm 10 lbs away from being in the "healthy" range, but I expect an even better week this week! I hope the same for you, friends! Thanks for reading!
